Program Level: Intermediate, Ages 8-17

Build confidence and expand painting skills with the Intermediate Painting Certificate program at The Artist’s Retreat. These engaging, hands-on painting classes are designed for young artists who are ready to move beyond the basics and explore more advanced techniques in color theory, brush control, composition, shading, blending, layering, and creative expression.

Each required course helps students strengthen their foundation while developing the skills and confidence needed to move to the next certificate program level, Advanced Painting.

These classes must be completed in a the order shown below. Each class is offered multiple times throughout the year, giving families the flexibility to create a schedule that works best for them.

Perspective – Parts 1 & 2 (1 hr each) $40 each

Learning to paint perspective helps artists create realistic scenes with depth, distance, and dimension. In this class, students will explore one-point and two-point perspective over two classes, while practicing how to draw roads, buildings, landscapes, and other objects so they appear to recede naturally into the distance. Mastering perspective strengthens observation skills and gives young artists the confidence to create more dynamic and believable paintings.

Composition Explained – Parts 1 & 2 (1 hr each) $40 eaach

A strong composition is the foundation of every successful painting. In this class, students will learn how to arrange shapes, colors, and focal points, over the course of two classes, to create artwork that is balanced, visually appealing, and engaging. Through hands-on projects, they’ll explore techniques such as the rule of thirds, leading lines, balance, and emphasis while discovering how thoughtful composition guides the viewer’s eye through a painting.

Using Color to Create Depth – (1 hr) $40

Using color to create depth is an important skill that helps paintings look more realistic and three-dimensional. In this class, students will learn how warm and cool colors, value changes, and color intensity can make objects appear closer or farther away. Through guided painting exercises, they’ll discover how to build atmosphere, create distance, and add dimension to landscapes, still lifes, and other subjects.

Final Project: Creating Your Own Composition- Parts 1, 2 & 3 (1 hr each) $40 each

Students will complete a final painting project over the course of three classes. This project will bring together all the techniques and skills they have learned in the Intermediate Painting Certificate Classes. This culminating project allows them to demonstrate their understanding of perspective and composition. Students must also use the skills they learned in the Beginning Painting Certificate Classes. Upon successfully completing the project, students will earn their Certificate of Achievement in Intermediate Painting.
